Hun Sen in My Eyes

with 49 comments

Hun Sen

Hun Xen and Piseth Pilika

Most of people in Cambodia even some international writers and politicians have named Hun Sen as the Strong Man of Cambodia. Why do they think this way? What does it mean by a strong man?

If I am not misunderstood the term of strongman identifying Hun Sen by them would have many senses. It means that Hun Sen is a competent leader, a strong and powerful leader, a leader who has many soldiers and military under his control and his political dynasty built up. These facts do exist in Cambodian political reality if we look into it without critics. Hun Sen always comes up in the media in Cambodia with pride and send the messages to all the Cambodians that Cambodian economic growth under his rule has raised quickly. He is the only liberator of the Cambodian people from the Khmer Rouge. He is the one who put the civil war in the country to an end in the late of 1990s. He is the only one who can lead Cambodia. He is the only leader who can secure peace, stability, and economic growth in the nation. He is the only one who can solve every problem in the country ranging from international issues to national issues and even to family issues from selling store to a hectar of land in conflict. He is the supreme commander-in-chief of the military, police, media and even the supreme commander-in-chief over the King’s institute, legislative and the court. Politically, he is able to centralize the absolute power under his leadership indisputably in Cambodia without check and balance system. And with all these, he is named as the Strong Man of Cambodia.

However, I see it differently. In my eyes I see Hun Sen as one of the most unsecured and weakest leaders in the world just like Fidel Castro, Kim Jung Il, Thein Sein and many others. These leaders lead the countries by fear, by cheating, by keeping their own people in poverty, and by depriving their rights of true information, education, and basic freedom. They have no true respect from their subjects nor have they competence to be entrusted in their leaderships. They are surrounded by hatred, revenge, and enemy of their own people and even the democratic lovers around the world and they also reflectively live and lead in fear.

Just see some cases in order to identify Hun Sen as the most unsecured and weakest leader is that his orders about abolishing deforestation, the gangsters, corruption, the second-hand control along the national high ways, and land grabbing have never been listened to and carried out by officials under his government and most importantly wherever he goes there always be thousands of bodyguards, soldiers, and military personals to protect him from his house’s gate to the place he stops. Similarly, every TV station keeps propagandizing the good deed about him day and night even an inauguration of the five hundred meters of the paved street as his personal donation and great achievement. And there are many more.

In general, Hun Sen has live a life of fear even though he successes in his political life to be the Prime Minister for along time, his power doesn’t come from the true support and his competence but from threat, killing, cheating, suppressing, and subjecting our national sovereignty to Vietnam for the exchange of power. He has never been a real and positive strong leader because he never leads the country by standing on his own feet. Yet he leads by begging other nations, depending on alms, and by submission to neighboring countries. The strong leader definitively leads the country by facing the truth, critics, responsibility, and fearing no enemy in order to move the country forwards to prosperity, democracy, dignity, unity, peace, and independence.

As a response to this proof, have we ever expected him to be able to lead the country as strong leadeship’s demand? No, please do not expect that he has the ability to stand up and successfully protect the national interests from other countries’ invasion, when he can’t even stand up nor has he the courage to face with even the critics and the peaceful and unarmed demonstrations and strikes. Moreover, do not expect that he has the ability to bring about the economic growth for the country when his government can’t even enact the corruption law nor can he personally have the ability to fight against the deforestation and land grabbing. He is able for nothing. Therefore, Hun Sen in my eyes is nothing but the most unsecured ad the weakest leader only.

Quote:

Chao Liang mentioned about Wukutafu when conversed with Lord Shang about the good and strong leader that Wukutafu, the councilor of Ch’in, when he was tired, he did not sit in the carriage, in summer he did not spread out a sunshade, when he traveled in the country he did not have carts or months following him, nor men carrying him shields and lances. His security is preserved in his merits and his merits were preserved in the stores, granaries and everywhere, and his virtuous conduct was displayed to later generations.

  7. Very good post. You have a new subscriber:) All the best, Andreas

  8. mongkul ..If Hun Sen is your hero, then you are seriously disturbed.
You know what I’ve noticed, people that are behind Hun Sen always say the same thing-”Prime Minister Hun Sen is a great leader because he ended the Khmer Rouge.” uhh.. okay, we all know this. He was good for that (30 mofo years ago), but it’s almost 2010 already and the country is still in its same state (besides the whole foreign economy thing going on, but even that doesnt make him look good either. He treats foreign investors before his own khmer people). It seems like he thinks he deserves so much praise like he’s God or something. He even takes the money used for the reconstruction and safe keeping of Angkor Wat into his own pocket. Wtf is this world coming to that he is STILL the PM ?! Cant the UN do something about this? i hear he’s estimated $1billion (rumor yes no??) whatever he’s worth, we all know its alot. ..shadyass prime minister is SHADY -_- might i add.

  9. what are you talking about?
    are you serious?
Do you know what is knowledge?
HUN Sen not just end the regime of Democratic Kampuchea (Khmer Rouge), but he’s also end the war which the world think it must be continue for 5 to 10 years.
You said that the country is still in its same state. Have you look around? 1992, can you transport to night, about 5 or 6 pm? and now?
You said, “Can’t the UN do something about this?”.
Don’t you read the constitution of the United Nation?
When you want to analyze something, take your steps back, and look around. It’s not mean that I’ve have good idea, but I just want to share what I know.
Oh! another one! Don’t forget the proofs!

  10. idon’t know much about Samdech Hun Sen, but i can see that being a leader is not easy, esp when you are prime of it.

We should be more realistic regarding what we say, seee, and hear. By that i mean say with more and could be trusted evidence.

    December 16, 2009 at 2:12 am

  11. To: KampujaButta: Come on. There is no doubt that Hun Sen was a war hero. He end the war, he liberated Cambodian and Cambodia as a whole. Yes I really thank for that. He so great. But please it does not mean that whit all he has done, he can do whatever he want. The country he is living in is Cambodia, not Hun Sen’s country. The leader is born to serve the people. The old day was gone. Don’t you see the the culture of impunity is strongly exist in Cambodia’s society. Don’t you see the dark side which Cambodian people, maybe you also, are living in right now. Look, we are looking forward. Not backward. It does not mean i don’t respect him, but please put country first. Speak frankly, he maybe a great general, a great soldier, or a great revolutionary hero, but he is not a great leader. When I say a great leader, it means that a leader that think about his own people’s well being.

  12. Wow, Wow, Wow…!!! Stop fighting man!!! We are all the same Khmer so we mustn’t fight each other like this. Are u not ashamed of the neighbors, Siam and Youn who always wait to see Khmer people fighting… I just wanna express my idea to Kampuja Butta. I ask u if u are the head of yr family and keep begging the money from others in order to live, how do u feel? More than 30years, something could be changed, not as same as today situation. The most serious problem Hun Sen never talk about or solve for example corruption, deforestation, border dispute with Youn, gasoline price and especially land grabbing. He always close his eye and ears about this problem. I don know what is he doing for the nation and Cambodian. When someone talk about border with Youn, he always threaten to death. He seems lean toward Hanoi Gov. and keep following the track of Hanoi Gov.. Do you see about this problem as what I said? Do you hah???
Are you a real compatriot??? Or just a Barking Dog???
Do u see the tons of tear of the poors crying over their land or property grabbed by rich men or high officers??? Do you see thousands of the poor to be beggers in neighbor countries??? How do you feel when you see your people go to beg in other countries??? Please speak it our honestly, guy…

    Neakpoan

    January 23, 2010 at 1:06 am

  13. Neakpoan, Hun Sen and his men had the foresight to see that his Khmer Rouge leaders under Pol Pot was destroying the country. As a lieutenant he had no choice but to obey orders. But give him the credit for saving the country from total disastor. That they did it wth the coloboration with Cambodia’s arch enemy, the Viets, was unfortunate. But he had no choice.

The thais were with the imperialist USA.The Chinese had their own designs on Cambodia.Like they did in Tibet.
And vietnam was the only superpower who had sent the US and it’s allies packing.
And to be fair, when Hun Sen took over the country’s coffers had been looted by the previous regimes.

As for enriching himself, which strongman didn’t?
Suharto took billions, So did Marcos,Mahathir, Estrada and even Thaksin too.

I am not condoning the abuse but they exist.
Neakpoan, if you could write this well in the Pol Pot era, your skull would have been on display in a museum now.

30 years is young for a new regime which was bankrupt when it came into power.
With education, hopefully, a much larger middle class will emerge and limit the abuses and corruption in your society.

One of the writers above said that it’s very much safer to walk along the streets at night. In fact, in Siem Reap, there’s hardly any crime at all.At least, in the eyes of the tourist.Quite unlike some places in Thailand or Indonesia.

You got to start somewhere, guys. Hun Sen is getting old.Khmers do not have that long a lifespan.

  14. History Bluff,
I think i just feel like this one of your comments. It seems that u make some sense with balance judgement…

  15. Son of Khmer, I will always try to be fair with my judgements. Sometimes you have to slap a guy silly, esp. a younger man, to wake him up and face reality.

I do my research based on historical evidence, coupled with visiting the places I am interested in. I have no vested interest in Cambodian affairs, though I have visited Siem Reap on several occasions. And will continue to do so, yearly, for the rest of my life.

I had followed it’s involvement in the Vietnam War, closely.

I have also visited Thailand for the past 30 years and speak Thai but that doesn’t mean that I will support the Thais when it comes to historical and territorial disputes. In fact I have pointed this out in their forums, for the past few years now, much to their displeasure.

I have also been banned from some forums for speaking the truth. That’s how democratic their press is!!

The educated amongst them know the reality and also know that their leaders do it as a distraction for their political masters and the mess they have created. Most are not interested cause they’re from the upper or middle class.

Happens everywhere.Don’t forget they own most of the media outlets.

The truth is, Thailand, over the past few decades, have been run by the rich Teochiew Chinese immigrants, propping up the Elite Thai families.

That’s why they see the Hakka, Thaksin, as a threat. Greedy as he might be.

Sadly, I see Cambodia going the same way. It’s inevitable. If not the Chinese or Taiwanese businessmen then it will be the Viets. But you’re not alone here.

10 percent of the Chinese population own 80 percent of Indonesian wealth.

    Doma

    March 24, 2010 at 10:36 am

  17. Doma, Hun Sen is a proxy. For whom it is obvious.

Yes, I will live in Cambodia, if allowed to.Provided it is governed by Cambodians and in accordance with universal practises, esp. on safety.

Cambodia’s destiny is for Cambodians to decide. All others are guests, only. And quests should not impose themselves on their host.

This is the Asian way of life.

Hopefully, Pol Pot and his clique is a one off disaster. Like Hitler was to Germany.

    November 27, 2010 at 2:08 pm

  24. Hello every one,
I am new to your club but I think your discussion can go beyond Hun sen personality or qualification, bcause we should invest fisrt why ,how and who had put him on top position since over 30 past years and ask ourselves who really administer Cambodia today .

  26. Hunsen was not a leader when Vietnam came into Cambodia in 1979. Maybe it was Heng Samrin. Heng Samrin, Chea Sim, Pen Sovan, Hun Sen and all their friends did not come to Cambodia to rescue any Khmer from Pol Pot. They were not heroes in that sense. They were just running for their lives when Pol Pot attempted to capture them because Pol Pot believe that these people are insiders for Vietnamese. If Pol Pot did not do that then those individuals mentioned above with their friends would be just like any Khmer Rouge working with Pol Pot.
Hun Sen came to power after Pen Sovan. Hun Sen is not the bad guy in Cambodia. He is just one of the members for Cambodian’ People’s Party. Does this party stand for the people or just for the few?
Hun Sen must be smart to be able to hold his power for so long. Some of you may not like the way he runs the country. Remember he is not doing it alone. There are a lot of people within that party not to mention maybe Vietnam. Many Khmers have been living in the western world hated Hun Sen, but when they got to live in Cambodia and make a lot of easy money had instead fallen in love with Hun Sen. Many that has not making much money from Cambodia remain dis-like Hun Sen. Hun Sen is not much different from many of us who has price tag on ourselves. We all can be bought out.
To many of us Hun Sen has sold us out and has sold land to Vietnam and has betrayed Khmer. Question is: is Sihanouk any different? How about Lon Nol, Pol Pot? Khiev Samphan, Ieng Sary, Ranarith, Sam Rangsey, etc? Have Hun Sen along with People’s Party really serve Vietnam or they just try to make more money to fill their big pockets; and make money to stay in power at all cost?
Remember that when we have different parties and fight among ourselves; the rich party want to get richer, the party with high morality is getting poorer and dying out that is the reason that Khmer is weak.
When the road has a lot of pot holes in it driving is rough. The road for unity and growth in Cambodia is very bumpy. No way Cambodia can suceed unity and prosperity by staying on the current roadmap. Look at the way we count our ballots during election for example. People vote for the party and not for an individual!!! How strange is that?

  31. I am a young cambodian. I don’t really support your texte ” HUN SEN IN MY EYES”. To win the politic, you have to find the proof that Hun Sen is wrong not to say like this. If you want to win, you have to find the way to show out in front of cambodian people. I don’t really believe that Hun Sen is good enough to be a leader. But, look around our country, does we have the war? Does people developped?
Befor my family is very poor, but now, i could continue my study abroad because of what? because we have no war? I still cannot find other leader who is good for the prime minister than him even i want to change the leader too. I don’t dare to accept you as the prime minister; as i need the reasonable person.

I hope cambodia do not have the same interior problem again like the past. So if you really love cambodia, please help him to develop country? If you know that Hun Sen is not good, show us by ur proof with references. If only saying like this text, I’m really disspointed, because I believe, you want to make conflict on cambodia.
