Thailand: The Nation of Dishonesty!

with 43 comments

It is Cambodian troops who invade in our soil”, said Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on Friday 18 July 2008.

If we observe the processes of the conflict we can judge who the righteous is and who the provoker and the invader is.

Legally and internationally, the sacred Khmer Preah Vihear temple was undisputedly recognized as Cambodian property and geographically, it is located in Cambodia soil both in the past and the present.

Historically, the sacred Khmer Preah Vihear temple was built in the 10th and 11th century by the august kings of former Cambodian Empire- Suryavarman I and Suryavarman II when the Tai tribe (present Thai) were still in Nan Jao southern of China who later moved southwards to resettle in the then Khmer Empire in the wake of the Mongol invasion of China and this tribe was forgiven and kindly allowed to live in our Empire by our benevolent kings.

However, our great Empire was weakened by the in-fighting politics and the war with other neighboring states. Taking this chance; the Tai built up its state, attacked and sacked us in the 1431. From then on we have been under the consistent attack and invasions by these neighbors for centuries.

Our country was able to survive under the French protectorate. Some provinces, Battambang, Preah Vihear, and Siem Reap, were given back by the Siam even though many are still under its occupation today, and the new borderline demarcation between Thailand and Cambodia was carried out drawn by the French. Thailand accepted the map and signed the treaties-1904 and 1907 which also used as the foundation for International Court of Justice (ICJ) in Hague in 1962 over the Preah Vihear case which favor Cambodia in the suit.

However, the Thai never give up their greed and honestly accept the loss proudly boasting that they are the superior people to all nations in South East Asia and why must they subject to the Khmer? The war continues. They rewrite their ultra-nationalist history, reject the existence of the Khmer political, cultural, and architectural influences in their society, create hatred and  the look down on Khmer,  Laos as well as Burma, and keep invading Khmer border both land and sea, and treat and kill Khmer like animal.

Now the wound becomes painful again to the Thai when it comes to Khmer Preah Vihear temple seek for World heritage status submitted since 2002 and finally granted its listing in 7 July 2008.

The Thai consider the loss of Preah Vihear as the unforgivable shame. They always try to be superior to Khmer. So how can they give it up easily and accept the loss? Then the frame over the border invasion and Preah Vihear control started. How could this have happened? The Thai know that it would be the loss again if they would contest with Cambodia honestly over the Preah Vihear unless they stage a long-term strategy and carefully frame over Cambodian weakness and the world’s soft politics toward them.  Let’s observe the below process of the political frame of the Thai.

Firstly, they persuaded Cambodia to sign the memorandum of understanding (MOU) over border demarcation, esp., the 2000 MOU. Why do we need MOU? Why don’t we use GPS basing on the existing map of Siam-Franco treaty to demarcate the borderline?

Then, they published the fake protests, to Cambodia, published widely in media, sent them to international communities, that Cambodia is invading Thai territorial sovereignty, esp., the protests in 2004, 2005, 2007, and April 2008.  Why are they the fake protests? Because have Cambodia ever invaded any country for these centuries? Is Cambodia capable to invade Thailand while she is trying to survive herself from poverty of decades of war and the internal conflicts? Thailand is a forever peaceful country and has its soldiers stationing everywhere along the border and how can the unarmed Cambodian civilian invade Thailand? We hardly believe this accusation of the Thai.

By using the 2000 MOU, the fake protests, and through its soft persuasion and the fake smile, the international communities listened to the Thai and asked Cambodia to negotiate with the Thai for their support in order to list the Preah Vihear temple. They successfully blocked Cambodia from listing the temple as World Heritage site two times 2006 and 2007 and hoped to achieve their greed, i.e., the Joint Management as they proposed.  Their often and basic arguments raised as an objection to the listing of the Khmer Preah Vihear temple is that the borderline is not known, the stair of the temple is in Thailand, the temple is easily accessible only from Thailand, some important sites subordinates to the temple are in Thailand, etc.,  so we must have the Joint Management. How can these people claim that the borderline is not known? Do they lose their mind and forget the Siam-Franco treaty in 1904 and 1907 and the verdict of ICJ 1962 which they themselves signed and recognized? Basing on the ICJ 1962, geographically the borderline is clear and the demarcated distance from the temple stair to the Cambodian-Thai border is as far as 2.6km away. But why the stair is in Thailand now? Did the Khmer build the temple without its subordinate elements and the stairs? So who invades whom?

Boring with the Thai objection and the easy-tricked international community, motivated by the political interest, the Cambodian leaders fell into the Thai trap by redrawing the new map proposed by the Thai. Why is it the trap? Because with the new map redrawn, the Thai will have privilege to lay claim for the 4.6 km2 land surrounding the Preah Vihear temple which is the long planned strategy to get rid of taking over the temple or achieving the Joint Management plan.

We can see it clearly that it is really the bad frame of the Thai. After endorsing the Joint Communiqué, they then rejected it. They are playing with two faces flip-flopping daily over the Khmer Preah Vihear temple issues in order to provoke the conflicts and they will take the opportunity to invade Cambodia. With this, they intentionally ignore the daily protestors who claim over Khmer Preah Vihear temple. And they even allowed these protestors to go into Cambodia illegally and protest inside Cambodia. Who believe that dozens of Thai border soldiers can’t prevent these three protestors from entering Cambodia? Where on earth one can enter into another country freely, illegally and protest against it? Cambodia detained them only four hours and then released without harm. Do we believe the Thai would treat us the same as we did to the three Thais if we entered into Thailand in the same situation? The answer is absolutely “NO”, because we have seen and witnessed so much Cambodian civilian blood covering the ground along the Cambodian-Thai border inhumanly committed by these brutal Thai.

Now it is almost their last step. After having achieved their strategical frames-the 2000 MOU, the Joint Communiqué, and the latest bait of three Thai protestors, they (Thai soldiers) entered into Cambodia freely by claiming that they come to protect their people who were arrested by the Cambodian soldiers. If the Thai are really honest neighbor why didn’t they send their delegates to negotiate for the release? Why soldiers? And it is absurd for the claim because the arrested people were already released and why don’t they withdraw?

With the pressure of Cambodia side and the international eyes, they later on claimed differently as Thai army Colonel Chay Huay Soongnern said, “We all love peace. We are here, we don’t want anything. We came to offer protection in case Thai protestors come here … We came to help Cambodian troops and their people. I don’t think that we will stay here much longer.” Why don’t they station in their country to prevent their Thai extreme protestors? Does Cambodia ask for their help? Do they think Cambodia is incapable for such a protection? I think Hun Sen government is even more capable in prevention than the Thai for such a protest.

Now the Thai trick is clearly revealedwhen Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, on Friday 18 July 2008, said that, “It is Cambodian troops who invade in Thai soil”.  He claimed this after his country has built up solid military base inside Cambodia and have observed the silence of international communities´s reaction against its invasion over Cambodia. Now they don’t withdraw as they said before but they keep building up their forces and at the same time they start to play diplomacy with the international communities in order to paint the bad image of Cambodia by summoning Cambodian ambassador to Bangkok to accept their protest against Cambodian invasion and inviting eight Asean members to receive their protests signed by PM Samak on 18 July 2008 and some others framed documents, 2000 MOU, the Thai protests against Cambodia invasion 2004, 2005, 2007 and April 2008.

It is even more clearly explained the dirtiness of the Thai if we reflect on the statement of the Thai Supreme Commander Gen Boonsrang Neimpradit who indicated that “Thailand could propose Phnom Penh withdraw about 500 Cambodian villagers from the disputed area as a condition for a Thai military withdrawal.” This statement is clearly referred to Sumak’s latest statement and the new redrawn map –the Joint Communiqué. It means that now they officially claim for the land and greedily want to completely control it.

They do know that if they don’t use forces to pressure Cambodia, the 500 villagers will not be removed and their dream to rob those surrounding lands of Khmer Preah Vihear temple will be failed and the seek for future Joint Management will be completely nonnegotiable and this will put the Thai for another shame.

What will happen if Cambodia doesn’t agree with the condition? I think the Thai will resort to other tricks. They might allow other Thai protesters enter into Cambodia and then provoke the war allegedly protecting their civilians. They might at night use Thai soldiers disguising as Cambodian soldiers and wage the war first against the Thai themselves and then accuse Cambodia as the first to wage war and then invade Cambodia.  Or there might be more invisible tricks. So watch out!

They do hope they will win the war because they think their army are superior to Khme army in term of equipments and numbers. Then the villagers will flee from their homes if the war would be erupted. They will control the land and pressure for the last bargain in exchange for the peace, i.e., the rightful control of the land surrounding the temple and it may be even the Joint Management of the Preah Vihear temple.

Do we hope the conflict will be solved easily? I do hope so only if Thailand can become the nation of honesty. For now I see that, “the conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand will not be easily solved if without international intervention, because Cambodia is trying to solve the conflicts basing on its honest, respectful, and friendly relationship with the Thai while the Thai is trying hard to solve it through its dirty political trick for long-term invading and dominant political strategy over Cambodia”.

My observation is that the Thai trick is easily revealed if we listen to their languages carefully. They always speak their languages flexibly according to the step of the situation development they have planned and achieved.

In Solidarity!

    It just a politics!

Finally, the way you show picture of our king is unexceptable to Thai.
Problems in boarder is not associate at all with our king.

  4. This is a wonderful article. Let’s circulate this. Let’s make the world know how greety and shameless the Thai are. Sokheoun, I strongly suggest you send this to Cambodia Daily for publication.

Thai were just a tribe asking for shelter in our empire and now they claim everything belong to them. How shameless! All contemporary Thai, please know that you’ve been taught the wrong the history. Please be openminded and read the real history of your country. When your country was born? How you invaded Cambodia? How greedy your leaders have been?

  5. That’s great job. You’ve done so good. First, i’d like to introduce myself, my name’s Boren Heng,a law student. I’ve read lot of historain books about South-east Asia which not only written by Khmers but also western acheologists. Yes,the Khmer Empire was very great counry but unluckily we had some problems that lead us to weak until now. Forturnately,we wake up and unite,so i hope we become stronger like our ancestors in Angkor Period as soon as. I have some commend to Kamolnum(Thai). You said, you not happy to the picture of your king in this site and it’s unacceptable for Siameses. Ya,i agree but it’s aceptable for Khmers. Why you said, Bhumibol is not involve in this case. The soldiers are king soldiers,if not so why his soldiers come to Khmer land?????I’m not a serious rationalist nor discriminated I have a judgement ,Bhumibol is the old person who knows clearly about this case,so he should tell his people the truth of history. I do request to Thai people,Thai historians and Thai politicians, they should dare to accept the truth of history in the humankindness. Preah Vihear is property of Cambodia only one by legally and history. Every country in the world know the true history, accept Thais. If you not believe,go to read the historian books which written by Western historians, especailly Chineses and Frenches. We have lost lot of provinces, temples, and millions of Khmer people instead in Present Thailand. We don’t wanna argue with you even though you’ve stolen our land and our culteres. we just wanna live in peace, but why you always make problems with us.It’s very roude that some Thais said we’re not the decendents of Khmer Empire and they’re the children of Khmer-Mon, that’s very funny. You can lie others, but can’t lie yourselves. I’m not angry with Thai people cos they study the wrong history,so it’s not their faults. I hope the world would have the real & true history for everyone. Believe in me, not all Thais are bad,but they just have the wrong thinking, i know everyone loves their country but should’t go crazy. Thanks

  6. Pang, you can express your freedom of speech, anyway you want.
But the picture of Thai King with a blood in background will not help your cause. As a matter of fact, it will unify Thai people. One thing of sure, Thai loves their current king. With effort and patient, Khmer will get the dispute area back. Insulted Thai King, the effort will be wasted and lead to direct confrontation.

  7. Okay, let me tell you this. The first thing you’ve gotta do is, to be neutral first!!!

    August 6, 2008 at 4:04 am

  8. lol after I read your article again. Now I’m sure that you are Khmer. So what am I expecting you to be neutral and not bias? 😛

    August 6, 2008 at 4:09 am

  9. What? Thais are invading Khmer temples and Khmer lands and you Thais telling Khmers to be neutral?

Hahahahaha…nice try, but it’s too late now that one Thai Para soldier got injured and one Thai black uniform soldier just died in his sleep. Sorry, but Khmers can’t help you Thais, only you Thais can help yourselves by leaving Khmer temples and Khmer lands.

  10. kamolnum:
I am Khmer and I am a business man in Cambodia.
Me too, I have Thai employee working for me in Cambodia.
We get along together Khmers and Thais in business.
However, have you ever read what does this comment say and have you
ever read the current situation right now in Cambodia and in Thailand?
Thais are invading Khmer temples and Khmer lands, what should I do?
Should I kick my Thai employees out of my business?

    August 7, 2008 at 1:44 am

  11. I hope Thai people would have the good judgement before believing in something. They have to study or find the fact not just depend on their internal history because no one says bad about her/himself. So, they should not treat Khmers like emnemies.

  15. I am a Khmer who lives around Phnom Dangrek.

The problem is that Khmer people have elected bad leaders who are bought by Thai and Vietnamese politicians, while Thai people have succeeded in kicking out many bad leaders in the past three years, including Thaksin and Samak.
Cambidian Government has been selling a lot of land to Thai and foreign politicians under the pretext of 99 year lease, at the expense of poor Cambodians. Thaksin, who himself had bought also a lot of Thai politicians, has been approached by a Khmer Leader to build an entertainment city in Koh Kong, in addition to many existing casinos along the border and his Camshin phone in Cambodia.
This is the reason why the Cambodian Government is not willing to bring Preah Vihear case to the International Court of Justice again nor to the United Nations. It does not want to risk losing benefits from Thai politicians.

Sadly, Khmer people have been fooled by their corrupt leaders, and they have no courage to remove them.

I would like to suggest that all justice-loving Khmer and Thai people must work together to get rid of corrupt and repressive leaders.

Dear Pang are free to visit Thailand any time, but you are not free to return to your home land in Cambodia.

  16. Good job! Sok Heoun. I agree with u to blame the King of Thai, because if people of the country go wrong, it is about the leader. And the leaders of Thai have often leaded their people and army to invade our land since the 14th century. Thai’s King rewrite the history, and make his people act like thieves or robber. Thai people still don’t know that their King, who is respected strongly, is leading them to the dead.
The end, I wanna say :”Keep trying, guy! Try your best. Write the word in Khmer people’s heart.”

  23. what is good about abhisit? U mean his education, his family rich? No…he is a true liar, a puppet of Yelow, double standard, hate the poor, sweet speaking, but he act like a fig and treacherous. abhisit has no quality for leading the country except his handsome body and word. what he can do is to speak softly to fool many dumb thai like you.

Very difficult to determine who is good, bad or retarded. those will show up when they do something.

listen from world surrounding you and be smart to judge. don’t trust one side information. i never say that Abhisit is good. just read my comment carefully, “you have to read and research”, my friend!

    February 10, 2010 at 1:10 pm

  26. So what is your opinion abt abhisit? can u tell me abt him. for me iam so fed up with those elite who keep looking down on the poorer, the poor, and the poorest. what has he done to us now if compared to Thaksin when he was in power. then we were better than we are now.

    February 11, 2010 at 8:46 am

Hahhhaaaa!!!if so please mind your businese. dont you feel shame enough with the present king family who suck our life like leeches and the few elite who control your life and thai in the whole country? Lt’s Khmers deal with hun sen. i’s enough with abhisit today that make the trouble for us. Dnt you know now how my business is going on here? Those elite in bangkok really dont know who we live along the border. they distroy our food, dont you know?

  28. While you Khmers and Siamese are fighting, you failed to notice that the Chinese Thais and Chinese/Viet khmers have been stealing your land, right under your nose.Case in point is that almost 80 percent of the economies of both countries are under their control.

And most of both your politicians are decendants from the Chinese.

Confucius said ” None are so blind as those with eyes that cannot see”

He could be referring to the Siamese and Khmers!!!

  30. So you are a nomad and a barbarian, right?

    March 5, 2010 at 11:25 am

  31. No. I am a decendant of the Aryans who ruled the Khmer Empire from the 8th to the 14th century.Khmer came from Kamboja, a powerful persian/indian kingdom in North Western India. Their people migrated to Burma,Thailand, Cambodia n Laos to build various empires there.Their language was Sanskrit and writings, pali, which you, the thais/burmese still used till today.Pali is from Sanskrit, the language of the Hindu Gods.
They also built the Borobodur in Jogjakarta,Java at the same time of the Angkor period.

Before the Kambojans came, South East Asia was dominated by ethnic brown skinned race who were controlled by Javanese Royalty. All are brown skinned natives, with the ruling elites being the fairest of the lot. It’s the Warna or skin color that determinds the status of the person. It’s still the case in Indonesia today, with the fairer javanese clan on the top of the heirachy.Same with Thailand and Malaysia too.

If you were around then, you would be a sudra or menial worker, judging by your skin colour.

Please don’t rewrite history like what the British and French did when they were the Colonial masters.

Go google Kemboj Society.Or Ancient Kemboj Rastra and go to the section, migration of Kembojans to south east asia.

Again, may I remind you.Check your sources first before you shoot your ill informed thoughts off. I understand that it’s not easy being of dark skin in any society, let alone one started by the Aryans.

    Live and learn, young man.

  32. You mean I should write a history like you did, but not like that of French and British in order to accept your dreaming superior race to me, right? Khmer is Khmer, ARYANS IS ARYANS…. if u keep claiming that then u should states that Aryan is also migrated from Africa. However, dont i make myself clear to u in my other previous post about our existence?

  33. I give up. I expected a more intelligent and respectful response. Some thai northerners, in Isaan and Khmer Surin, have begun to use white cream to whiten their skins. They want to be accepted to Thai high society.

I suggest you do the same.Look at the people surrounding Hun Sen and your politicians, They’re all fair skinned. That’ why you can’t and won’t fit in.

Have you ever thought of that?

  34. Why do u so care abt the colour of the skin? It dsnt make sense in this day coz all colours are living together and integrated and let the elite in bangkok live in their primitive world. i just want to tell u that here u can see….the black, the white, the brown are one…no one cares abt that like u claim…I just left my country and i do know my social status. Any way thank you History Buff for ur active (talkative) ideas

  35. Haha, you’re thinking before shooting your mouth now. That’s good for you and all your countrymen. If no one cares for the Elitis status then India and South east asian countries would be all peaceful now.But it’s not, mainly due to the heirachy of the ‘clsss systen’, Caste too, in some cases.

Now, let’s take a look at the names given to their citizens. The Elites have all Sanskrit names.

Like your Kings of the past. Suriyavarman,Jayavarman and all their high priests and hinh ranking officials.

Thai King, Bhumibol and Abhisit and most of the old Siamese families too bear Sanskrit names.

But yours,Hun Sen, Saloth Sar,the chuays, tans, wongs are all not from Sanskrit. They’re more from southern chinese dialects not even from the Han Dynasty which are the mandarins of Chinese society.

As I mentioned before, high society in all south east asian countries comprised fair of light skin people ONLY.That’s the decree from the Aryan heritage which was forced up this region by the immigrant ‘invaders’ or colonialist. They introduced Hinduism, Buddhism and Pali writings to almost all South east asian countries.Even the filipino langauge, Tagalog, has many words ‘borrowed’ from Sanskrit.

    Please google them.

Why am I telling you all this? Because ALL the Khmer Kings, priest and temple builders were from Persia/Northern India.

    Again, go google, kamboj society.

  36. I have never read or seen anything about my kings witnessed that my Kings were from persian but they were KHMERS.

YOU SAY: “If no one cares for the Elitis status then India and South east asian countries would be all peaceful now.But it’s not, mainly due to the heirachy of the ‘clsss systen’, Caste too, in some cases” I SAY: So pls tell me where are the wars now? So you think all wars created because of the colours of the skin and nothing else? If you refered to the past I agree with you, but not in the modern day. It is out of date now Mr. Old MAN.

YOU SAY: “As I mentioned before, high society in all south east asian countries comprised fair of light skin people ONLY.That’s the decree from the Aryan heritage which was forced up this region by the immigrant ‘invaders’ or colonialist.” I SAY: except Iran, Afganistan… The true colours of the Aryans, in central asia, are Indian today existed in all classes….pls look at them and see their colours which majority of them are dark brown,… but pls dont mention the few elite Indians whose blood is mixed and appearance is beutified by the modern cosmetics. So Khmers have naturally fairer skin colours than them because majority of us are light brown or fair skin. So If the world think like you then the majority of Indians, may be included Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Banglades… and the black Africans will be considered as the untouchable classes.

And may i tell you even you now have a fair skin but it dosnt mean that you are different because YOU IS STILL YOU, and I mean if you are from INDIAN then the real colour of Idian people is DARK BROWN.

Lastly, I’ld like to tell you that “Peace doesnt come from beautifying your skin color but your mind and you can change your skin color but this color cannot change who YOU ARE.” This is absolutely an out of date argument i have ever discussed in my life.

  37. I feel sorry for you because you look like an Isaan native. You must be one of the darkest Cambodian around. Not easy to carry that stigma Asian society. But you have to come to terms with it.

By your responses I can see that you’re black hearted too.As the Siamese say it “Jai Daam”.

Though I don’t condone it, rascism still exist in Asian society.

Hopefully, not for long. Now that the US got a half- black president.

And hopefully, you will discover the truth as you get older.

By the way your countrymen were known as Khmers only after the people from Kemboja came over, in the 7th Century. Before that they were peaceful and simple brown skinned nature worshippers like the Indons and Pinoys in the Phillipines.Same skin colour too.

Please go to the links I gave you.Remember your frog in the well analogy?

  38. If my colour are like those of ISAAN, then it even fairer than those of majority in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and even Africa, So i must be proud of who I am.

I think, all your comments in my blog, you have nothing to say besides the colour of the skin and the notion of immigration to prove one is good, smart, and superior, and it seems that the colour of the skin is more valuable than the brain, education, morality, and intelligence a person has and ONLY the immigration that can make a man be superior to others or more intelligent than who he used to be. So why do you try to study, old man, and why dont you try to whiten your skin so that people give your respect and call you the elite, Old man? Or why don’t you keep migrating from place to place to be called smart and superior?

Chinese are white but why there are bad and good chineses and why they killed each other? and chinese is still not the first world like USA, Israel, UK, Japan… European people are all white skin and why not all of them are elite? Why are there poor Europeans and rich europeans? Iran who claim to be the Persian (Superior race as you claim) why IRAN is not a first world? Even far behind the recent established Israelis nation. And Why Iranians, killed each other if they are all just one race, PERSIAN, have the same fairer or white colour of the skin? Or Iran today is ruled by the non-Iranian, i mean immigrant as you used to claim, may be descendant KHMERS who married to a Persian? No one knows, right?

Thai know only Jai Daam but Khmer know better and so reasonable which states in our old saying that ” Khmao roub khmao chet, Khmao roub tae chet saw, and Sobol saw tae chet Khmao”. meaning “Some people are black in both heart and skin, some are black skin but with a white heart, and some people are white kin but their hearts are BLACK.”

I just want to tell you that all the philosophers from the ancient time to present day, never say that it is the colour of the skin that make people different in good, bad, and intelligence, and ONLY a jungle educated person like you who has claimed so. SO SORRY for you old man.

I also would like to remind you that KHMERS are still KHMERs, and the skin colour change has nothing to do with us KHMER since all races in the world are affected by the global environment change, knowledge development, technological advancement, cultural interaction…etc. And to be clear to you, there is no race is a pure race, we are interrelated and integrated. But each race’s identity is still preserved and respected.

  39. Yeah? Tell that to the Africans and other dark skinned tribes.

Especially in south east asia- Indonesia and the Phillipines,Loas and even Burma, the first SEA country to have Hindu/Buddhist influences from India.

The ancient temples, built in Bagan, two hundred years before the Angkor Era,can vouch for it.

Go google Bagan. Or go to Youtube if you cannot afford to take a trip there.

  43. I think all the problems of Khmer Kingdom in the past and current Cambodia are you are weak !
You lost your land to Thailand and Vietnam because your country was/is weak and unstable.
Please stop blaming Thai or Viet…, you should try to make your country great and stable. And in future Khmer Kingdom may be reborned with its rightful land.
I am Vietnamese and I love Khmer tradition.
